What is social media?

Simply put, social media is the term used to describe a variety of websites that connect you with friends and friends of friends via the internet so you can keep in touch & share photos. Over one billion people are active users of social networks and this figure is growing fast. Facebook and Twitter are the two biggest social networks.

How can social media benefit my business?

Facebook is a social network and an average Facebook user has 130 friends. At Rocketspark, we have around 200 people following our page. If we post a photo or make a comment that is of interest to our followers they can comment on that like "Cool photo guys". Then, that person's 130 friends will see that their friend commented on Rocketspark's photo and get exposed to the Rocketspark brand. Our 200 followers means that we can access a potential audience of over 24,000 people. Of course not every follower will comment on our posts or photos but the potential reach is there.

One of the best reasons to embrace social media as a marketing tool for your business is that it's free. The only cost is the time that you put into it. Social media is not a magic bullet and a "set it and forget it" approach will have little benefit. However, if you put a little time each week into making interesting posts for your followers you will no doubt see a noticeable increase in your website traffic.

How many people are really using it?

As of November 2011:

  • 800 million active Facebook users worldwide (213 million in Europe, 13 million in Oceania).
  • 400 million people use Facebook daily.
  • 380 million people are active Twitter users.

Should I use Facebook, Twitter or both?

As a social network, some people prefer Facebook, some people prefer Twitter and some people use both. We recommend that businesses create a Facebook page as a first step. Once you're comfortable posting updates on your Facebook page and connecting with your followers, a good next step is to link your Facebook page and Twitter profile. This means that if you make a status update on your Facebook page, it automatically posts to your Business' Twitter profile as well. This way you can target both Facebook and Twitter users with the one update. Click here to link your Facebook page and your twitter profile.

Why am I struggling to get more followers?

Have you told everyone you know about your business' Facebook page? Facebook and Twitter are Social media so it's important that you be social about it and tell everyone you know that your business is on Facebook and/or Twitter. The growth of people following you gets easier as your potential audience increases. This is because your potential audience grows with each new follower. If you have 5 people following you, your potential audience is 650. If you have 50 people following you, your potential audience is 6500.
